Standing Still is a brand-new stand-up comedy show by seasoned comic, ex-professional dancer and cabaret dynamo Joana Joy (Banana Jolie). In a desperate move to 'do less' and 'be more', JJ has created a stand-up comedy show where she will stand (mostly) still. Except at three random times, decided by the audience -when she will absolutely throw down.
Stand-up comedy with dance. Maybe a Muay Thai demonstration. As a socially conscious comedian, JJ shines light on the human experience. Her material ranges from being a mature age student, the history of dust, idioms rewritten, how to not smoke and have clean habits, meditation, tidying-up, therapy and sibling dynamics.

Based on the acclaimed novel by John MacKay, The Road Dance is adapted for the screen and directed by Richie Adams. Inspired by true events, this period drama centres on a young woman in a small community on the Isle of Lewis (off the coast of Scotland) in the years leading up to World War I.
Life in the Scottish Hebrides is harsh - the edge of the world some call it. For the beautiful Kirsty (Hermione Corfield), her love for Murdo and their shared dreams of America promise escape from the scrape of the land and a stifled destiny. But the Great War changes all when Murdo is conscripted. The night before the young men go off to battle, tragedy is set in motion as villagers swirl and sup at a “road dance.”
Kirsty herself faces the horrors of a sexual assault that leaves her pregnant—and with few options...
Director: Richie Adams
Cast: Morven Christie, David Brooks, Hermione Corfield, Felicity Keenan, Ali Fumiko Whitney

In order to move forward, we must first look back
We Are Still Here is a unique Indigenous film that interweaves eight powerful tales to tell a
sweeping story of hope and survival.
Through the eyes of eight protagonists, We Are Still Here traverses 1000 years from past,
present, and future to explore stories of kinship, loss, grief, and resilience. But ultimately, it
shows the strength of love and hope to overcome shared traumas that Indigenous people
from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific have continued to face.
From the beginning of time, in a Utopian world, a traditional fisherwoman and her Daughter
are fishing when they pull up an ominous ship, foreshadowing stormy seas and tragedy to
follow. Forward to 1862, a British Settler threatens an Aboriginal man to lead him to safety,
whilst in New Zealand, tribes cocooned deep in the forest are preparing for a terrifying
future.
Te Puuru, Te Whenuanui, Te-Mauniko
In 1915, men from the Pacific were sent to support the British Colony in World War One fighting for a land that isn't theirs, with uncertainty of ever seeing home again. Flashing forward into a dystopian future, a young child must navigate her way through a dangerous underground marketplace to save her grandfather and survive.
We Are Still Here showcases the expansive landscapes of the Central Australian Desert to the lush green rainforests of New Zealand.
In spite of colonialism, racism, imperialism and the attempted erasure of Indigenous lives,
WE ARE STILL HERE.

Karioi Quilts & Crafts - second Thursday of every month.
The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. Primarily a patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.
This year, 2023, we changed the name to Karioi Quilts and Crafts to open the group up to other crafters.
Members can work on their own projects ranging from quilts, sewing projects and you can even bring your knitting, as long as it’s not a messy craft anything goes. New members are always welcome to come along to work on their own projects and learn techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.
Group co-ordinator is Sue Webber 021 489944
Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm (sometimes 3pm if the room is available) on the second Thursday of every month. 10 sessions per year from February to December. Subscription is $30 per year which goes towards room hire.

Ensemble Sangineto (Italy) - Aotearoa Tour
Making their Aotearoa debut, Ensemble Sangineto are travelling all the way from Italy to tour New Zealand this summer. Beginning at the Whare Flat Folk Festival and finishing at the New Zealand Harp Festival, the trio play a variety of small halls, festivals and community venues in between.
Ensemble Sangineto is an eclectic band which blends skilfully ancient harmonies and sonorities with modern rhythms. The wide-ranging musical experiences of the individual members converge to create fresh arrangements of traditional Irish, Scottish, Breton & Italian tunes and original compositions that display influences from many varied musical genres ranging from classical to folk, from Gregorian chant to musical, from pop to Celtic music.
The delicate combination of the pure and magic tones of the harp and of the bowed psaltery with the guitar intermingle with the three voice-polyphonic texture evoking dreamlike and airy atmospheres, which are simultaneously joyful and light.

Two-time Oscar nominees Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) and director Stephen Frears (The Queen) join forces, retelling the story of the historian who found the lost remains of England's King Richard III... underneath a Leicester carpark in 2012.
Graham Tuckett Stuff/ Waikato Times, "Sally Hawkins shines in a breezy, enjoyable and very watchable tale"
After having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a carpark in Leicester. The search had been orchestrated by an amateur historian, Philippa Langley (Hawkins), whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. The Lost King is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country's most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England's history.
Coogan co-wrote the script with Jeff Pope, both of whom previously worked with Frears for 2013's Oscar-nominated Philomena.
Director: Stephen Frears

Artist Talks kicks off 2023 with local painter Brad Dring - aka Shortydubs - on Thursday 23 February at 6.30pm.
Entry by koha | Licensed bar open and refreshments for sale
After 20 years of making music and performing worldwide with band Rapture Ruckus, Brad changed tack to accommodate his young family and morphed from hip hop music to street inspired
art.
As luck would have it Brad made the move with his family to Whaingaroa in 2019 before the ability to travel easily was put on pause by the pandemic.
“I have two young boys and I really wanted them to hear the ocean like I did and get into surfing and things like that. So hence why we chose Raglan.”
Any artist will tell you it’s hard to dampen the creative urge and Brad took up painting, which he could fit around family life. Describing himself as an urban artist dabbling in street art, pop art and
graphic design, Brad takes well-known imagery like a King of the Pipeline Gerry Lopez photograph and uses digital stencils, spray paint and motifs to reimagine the original.
“A lot of the creative work I was doing, other than the performing and playing instruments, was all very computer based - the music making and the video editing and digital photography. I really
wanted to find a medium of doing artwork and getting dirty with wood and spray paint, and using my hands and getting it out of the computer.”
While it’s not yet bringing Brad the acclaim he found with Rapture Ruckus, he is selling a few pieces online through his Instagram page @shortydubs, and more importantly he is filling his creative bucket.
“I'm really just doing it for me at the moment and putting some stuff up online, and I’ve sold some work over the Internet.”
The born-and-bred Wellingtonian still manages to fit in music on top of family, work and painting.
He also loves working with up-and coming young musos and artists in more of a mentor role, sharing his journey and wealth of creative experiences.

MILKED. ( Dr Jane Goodall and filmmaker Keegan Kuhn (Cowspiracy) are some of the many interviewees who chime in on this exposé documentary about the New Zealand dairy industry, a pillar of national pride that's become the country's biggest threat.
From director Amy Taylor (Soul in the Sea).
A young activist goes deep into dairy land where he takes on the giants of New Zealand's most powerful industry, and reveals how the sacred cash-cow industry has been milked dry. His journey exposes not only the sustainability crisis and the dangerous denial of impending agricultural disruption, but also what New Zealand and other countries can do to change their fate.

We need your help!
We're throwing and hand building bowls for Raglan's first Empty Bowls fundraiser!
Empty bowls is a global phenomenon where local potters team up with local eateries to raise money for food related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities.
We'll descend upon the clay shed for one fab weekend, make as many bowls as possible and once they're fired we'll fill them with tasty food for a big ole community dinner, where diners will pay $20 for their bowl of food, and get to keep the bowl too.
Clay provided! You’ll need to use your clay shed concession card, thank you!
March 4 - Sat - making day 10am - 7pm drop in and out, last one on the wheel at the end of the night cleans up.
March 5 - Sun - trimming and decorating.
Feel free to bring some snacks to share with the crew!
EMPTY BOWLS
All proceeds will go to the food bank's new community Kai Night running regularly down at the Raglan Town Hall Supper Room. Kai Night is free delicious and nutritious food for anyone feeling the pinch or wanting a bit of company... i.e. ALL of us! No stigma mate, just a fun night out for our gorgeous community.

At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood.
Twenty years later, Sophie's tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film.

Writer: Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope
Cast: Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan, James Fleet, Harry Lloyd, Sinead MacInnes
