From the best-selling novel comes a captivating mystery. Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumours of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.

Millie Lies Low is a sharp character driven comedy-drama that follows Millie as she anxiously navigates her way through a period of crisis in her life. She is both our protagonist and her own antagonist. Millie Lies Low is a female-centric film with themes of identity, options paralysis, self-representation and finding one’s place in the world.
Anxiety-ridden Millie is on her way from Wellington to New York for an internship at a prestigious architecture firm when a moment of panic causes her to miss her flight. She doesn’t have the money for another ticket, and a deep sense of shame prevents her from fessing up to her friends and family. So instead she lies low in her hometown in order to scrounge for another ticket, while using her wits and Instagram to convince her friends, boyfriend, mum, and the world at large, that she’s successfully living the dream in NYC. With her options running out she resorts to increasingly desperate schemes as her hastily constructed facade begins to crumble.
Director: Michelle Savill
Writer: Michelle Savill, Eli Kent
Cast: Ana Scotney, Cohen Holloway, Alice May Connolly, Rima Te Wiata, Chris Alosio, Jillian Nguyen, Sam Cotton

For the first time, celebrated American photographer Steve McCurry opens up about the stories behind his iconic images and reflects on the defining moments of his extraordinary life and forty-year career.
MCCURRY: THE PURSUIT OF COLOR is the first intimate feature length portrait of the contemporary photojournalist Steve McCurry. The one thing more poignant than McCurry’s pictures is his tumultuous 40-year career, which he’s spent travelling the globe essentially alone, capturing candid snapshots depicting the complexity of human life. Exclusive interviews with family, friends, colleagues, and with the photographer himself, bring to life the stories behind some of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century. With unique access to the photographer's creative process and unpublished images, we discover how McCurry’s vulnerabilities set him on the path to greatness and we witness first-hand his commitment to record what defines and unites humankind - a race against time in an increasingly fractured and culturally homogenous world.
Director: Denis Delestrac
Cast: Paul Theroux, Bonnie McCurry Reum, Michael Carroll, Anthony Bannon, Robert Dannin, Elie Rogers, Bruce Duffy, John Echave, Andie Belone

Karioi Quilters - second Thursday of every month.

Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm on the second Thursday of every month. So join them for a coffee and bring your lunch. Donation of $2 to help with the rent.

LIVE & LOCAL FRI NOV 11 at Raglan Old School Arts Centre – upstairs in Whare Tapere
Koha entry, 7.30pm, doors 7pm
As of November, the Live & Local concerts move to the second Friday of the month, so mark that date from here on in. Always a great night out, you’re assured of the pick of Raglan’s talented singer-songwriters, poets, comedians and more. And all for koha entry!
Nicky Keys
Each month we showcase three local acts: professionals and amateurs, newbies and old hands. This month sees the return of Nicky Keys. Nicky played Live & Local last year; known as a keyboard wizard he also has a great line in humorous tales and was a very popular act last time he appeared. A long-time resident of Raglan, Nicky has over 25 years of experience in the music industry playing keyboards for bands such as Cornerstone Roots, Lost Tribe Aotearoa and Native Sons.
November’s Live & Local will also feature Tim Grimes. Tim will be playing songs that he wrote. On a guitar and a ukelele. Tunes from North-Western Europe, by boat (no experience with sailing). In praise of the sea and other things greater than he.
And for something a bit different, we have an eclectic mix of circus acts by three of Raglan’s circus professionals – Evelyn Coulson, Irene Goed and Nick Davies
Evelyn Coulson: 24 November 2018.

Nick Davies
Evelyn is a circus artist specialising in all things circular – especially hula hoop. Evelyn has been involved in the New Zealand circus community for a decade and performing professionally for the past seven years. She has performed hula hoop across New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Central America. Now that she is based in Raglan, she hosts a weekly hula hoop class on Wednesdays at the Old School Arts Centre and is also a tutor at the local circus and dance studio – Freedom2Fly.
For more fun with circular objects, Nick Davies will perform a hat juggling act. And after years of performing mainly aerials Irene Goed from Circus Aotearoa is back on the ground manipulating objects with hands and feet. She has put a contemporary twist to a traditional foot juggling routine.
We also have young singer-songwriter Luna De La Cruz playing a short set. Luna has lived in Whaingaroa all her life and has her been playing guitar and keyboard for a few years and has been singing from a young age. She loves surfing, dancing, drama, art and of course, music.

There is no painter in the world both more famous and less known than Edvard Munch.
The debt contemporary culture has towards Munch is impressive, from Andy Warhol to Ingmar Bergman, from Marina Abramovich to Jasper Johnes.
If his painting has become a symbol and at the same time an omen of the tragedies of the twentieth century, his art has travelled new and experimental roads of extraordinary modernity. Today, however, it is his city, Oslo, which sets a turning point for the knowledge of Munch: the birth of a new museum. This documentary will start from there to shed light on a man and an artist with singular charm, a precursor and a master.

Observational New Zealand documentary from veteran independent filmmaker Costa Botes charting the unusual life of musician, journalist, artist and cow whisperer, Cambridge framer Andrew Johnstone.
After a series of failures in love and life, a social misfit returns to his family's farm near
Cambridge, where he discovers an unexpected and bewitching affinity with cows.
Veteran Kiwi filmmaker Costa Botes’ latest feature follows the daily routines of herdsman
Andrew Johnstone, who lives on his parents farm, looking after a large group of beef cattle.
He is thoughtful, highly articulate and well-informed, and in the course of his varied life has
played many roles, from poet, journalist, and radio broadcaster, to farmer, fencer and rock
star.
In this delightful and thought-provoking documentary, we discover the life of a man who
has suffered tragedy and disappointments, but has ultimately found his way to healing and
contentment, giving us all pause for thought and providing some rollicking good yarns along
the way.
