The Weather Report is a powerful and moving short film by artist Jill Impey. The film records
the voices of women from coastal, immigrant and creative communities in New Zealand and
England. The women reflect on their relationships with heritage and feelings about the weather, the sea, migration and colonisation.

Filmed on location in New Plymouth, New Zealand and Plymouth, England.

The sea holds us together.
A powerful, moving record of the thoughts and voices of women from coastal, immigrant and creative communities. The Weather Report was recorded during local workshops in New Zealand and England.
Participants engaged with the artist’s creative processes by exploring natural objects through drawing, making and using
language.
They reflected on their relationships with heritage, the weather and the sea.
They discussed the impacts of immigration, migration and colonisation on their respective senses of belonging.
The resulting film considers how connection is made and unmade by inclusion and exclusion, the potency of cultural and natural objects like the conch shell and the damaging effects of suppressing language and culture.
It asks the question: What does it mean to be a ‘good ancestor’?

Post-screening workshops with artist Jasmine Teei invite you to take inspiration from the film and use creative processes to explore what being a good ancestor means to you.

Take part in a project about connection.
