UPROAR is a moving and heartwarming story about connection and finding your place in the world. It is the story of 17-year-old Josh Waaka (played by Julian Dennison). Set in Dunedin in 1981, a rugby-obsessed country is divided over the arrival of the South African Springboks team, sparking nationwide protests. Under pressure from home and school to conform, Josh, who has never felt like he fits in anywhere, is inspired by the protests and by a newfound passion for performing to find his own voice. A sequence of events sees Josh embrace his community and his whakapapa Māori, taking him and his whānau on a journey towards healing.

When disaster strikes a community arises! Taking Back Our Beach’ opens in New Zealand cinemas from October 5, 2023, which is also the 12th anniversary of the Rena grounding in 2011 on Otaiti/Astrolabe Reef.

TAKING BACK OUR BEACH
When the MV Rena grounded on Ōtāiti (Astrolabe reef) on 5 October 2011 it wasn’t just the iconic New Zealand coastline and wildlife that were threatened by the ensuing black waves of oil and debris, but also a lifestyle treasured by its residents. The disaster reveals a deep connection to the environment in both local Māori and Pakeha (European descendants) alike.
When floundering bureaucrats initially ignore the local advice and knowledge that could have largely avoided the disaster, and then are painfully slow to clean up the overwhelming mess, the community steps in, taking matters into their own hands. A groundswell of volunteers goes out daily to help save wildlife and clean up the massive field of oil and debris strewn along the coast.
The film captures the shock, anger and grief driven into the heart of the local community, but also the humour, purpose and overwhelming positivity when people join together with a common goal.
In the aftermath of the clean-up, a further battle to remove the remains of the wreck ensues, with community unity threatened through the overpowering insurers and ship owners. The mauri (life force) of a national taonga (treasure) Ōtāiti is forever altered, however the power of a simple act of forgiveness shown to the ship’s scapegoated Filipino crew offers a beautiful way forward to growth and recovery.
From septuagenarian widowers chasing oiled penguins around their living rooms to a 6-metre long barbecue feeding volunteers for free, to youth impersonating army personnel in order to be allowed onto the beach to clean up oil, the documentary is made up of interviews with 35 local people (iwi, retirees, volunteers, wildlife leaders, marine experts, small business owners and community leaders).
A wealth of never-before-seen stock footage and amazing photos, augmented by re-enactments and CGI graphics brings these stories to life and paints a picture of “a great moment in human history” (the late Brian Rogers, Owner Sun Media / Interviewee).

RIVER OF FREEDOM how thousands of New Zealanders begin a convoy to Wellington from Cape Reinga and Bluff with a clear message to the government - end the mandates.
On the road to Parliament are people from all walks of life - teachers and students, caregivers and medical professionals, first responders, tradies, musicians, commercial pilots, farmers, business owners, government employees, all suffering some form of loss, whether it be employment, education, connections, wellbeing or opportunities, the impact is both significant and real. The convoy sparks hope for them and the many others who have been negatively affected across the nation!
New Zealanders gather on the lawn of Parliament to express their grievances, intent on change and expecting democratic representation. Local tangata whenua welcome the protestors and together they co-create a ‘freedom village’ - a symbol of resistance, resilience, and kotahitanga (unity).
They stand strong in the face of police arrests, psychological tactics orchestrated by the Speaker of the House, gale force winds and Wellington’s second wettest day on record.
After 23 days, the New Zealand Police ambush the community in a dawn raid, forcibly removing everyone with weapons never before used in Aotearoa.
River of Freedom is made by professional filmmakers present during the convoy and occupation - the largest and most diverse protest movement in New Zealand’s history.

Our popular series of showcases for local performers continues this month.
It’s looking like another great line-up for this month’s showcase of local Whaingaroa acts - and this one’s full of bands. We have The Ragtimers ukulele group, The Music Lovers and Dave Maybee and Peter Skandera with Ashley Knox and Freddy Limbert.
The Ragtimers will be playing some favourites and one or two songs they’re working up for Christmas – all with the cheerful sound of massed ukes.
The Music Lovers are various combinations of Cathy Trueman, Ray and Betty Diprose and Lucy Haru who will be playing covers and originals.
Raglan musical maestros Dave Maybee & Peter Skandera will be joined by fellow legends Fred'Mo Limbert (drums) & Ashley Knox (bass). Three of these players were in the Raglan Mudsharks (of Raglan By The Sea TVNZ doco fame) and are a big part of Raglan’s legendary music heritage.

UPROAR is a moving and heartwarming story about connection and finding your place in the world. It is the story of 17-year-old Josh Waaka (played by Julian Dennison). Set in Dunedin in 1981, a rugby-obsessed country is divided over the arrival of the South African Springboks team, sparking nationwide protests. Under pressure from home and school to conform, Josh, who has never felt like he fits in anywhere, is inspired by the protests and by a newfound passion for performing to find his own voice. A sequence of events sees Josh embrace his community and his whakapapa Māori, taking him and his whānau on a journey towards healing.
