Doors open 7pm. Gig starts at 7.30pm. Tickets $25 on the door, $20 in advance from undertheradar
There’s something instantly captivating about the music of nineteen-year-old Beth Torrance. She skilfully simmers our most deep and untameable feelings down to their purest form, offering them to the world as songs that are poetic, potent, and true.
Beth is celebrating the release of her debut EP, Tiny Flowers (via Particle Recordings), with a tour of Te Ika-a-Māui. She’ll kick off in her hometown of Tāmaki Makaurau before heading down to Raglan, Thames, and finishing in Pōneke.
‘Vocally, her delivery is incredible, emotive, and rare. [Beth’s] talent for crafting lyrics is surpassed by very few of her contemporaries and is what sets her apart’ — Ear to the Ground
‘[Tiny Flowers] is a tender and airy atmospheric blend of folk with a haunted presence with a significant emotional weight that feels like it blends the power of Adrianne Lenker with Phoebe Bridgers into something that is quite hard to shake’ — We All Want Someone to Shout For

Revenge has never been sweeter.
James Croot STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES 4.5/5 “One of 2024’s most crowd-pleasing and uplifting cinematic experiences ”
When 93-year-old Thelma Post (Oscar nominee June Squibb) gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her. A story exploring aging, family, and autonomy (and uniquely inspired by action movies like “Mission: Impossible”) – the film is based on a real-life experience of writer/director Josh Margolin’s grandmother, and marks Squibb’s first leading film role of her 70+ year career. This action comedy also stars Parker Posey, Richard Roundtree, Clark Gregg, Malcolm McDowell, and Fred Hechinger.

There is a lot of story to tell, in the events that led to the fall of Ōrākau, and Ka Whawhai Tonu covers a lot of ground, but still finds time for some of the more bonkers true-to-life details that transpired.
Graeme Tuckett STUFF/ WAIKATO TIMES 4/5 “Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End: A welcome depiction of some indelible New Zealand history ”
Set in New Zealand (Aotearoa in Māori) in 1864, Ka Whawhai Tonu tells the story of a pivotal battle in the country’s first land wars, a battle fought with impossible odds between Māori and the colonial forces. This heroic conflict is told through the eyes of two young teenagers forced to take control of their own destiny amidst the chaos of the battle and their escape.

Graeme Tuckett STUFF/ THE POST 4/5 “ The Road to Patagonia is an astonishing film to look at. Matty has a great eye for a frame and he sets up his cameras to drink in some glorious slices of nature. And his own and Heather’s narration – some of it recorded on the road – is economical, quite unflinching and heartfelt.”
The Road to Patagonia is a stunning, intimate and unflinching series of love letters within a documentary – firstly a love between two people, and secondly between humanity and the Earth. We follow Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure, to surf the west coast of the Americas by motorbike, from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia.
But deep in the wilderness - alone with the wolves and the bears – Matty’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces. After losing everything, and on the cusp of quitting he meets the girl of his dreams, a permaculture farmer named Heather Hillier who throws caution to the wind and sells her urban-farm to buy a bike of her own. Together riding south, the duo meet with Zapatista rebels, Amazonian shamans and Mapuche leaders whose salient words crack the adventurers’ cultural veneer.
The theme of deep ecology underpins the entire film, visually communicated through exquisite cinematography and emotional verité sequences. Shot over 16 years, the result is an adventurous exposé on the more-than-human world, offering a physical and spiritual odyssey to better understand our place in Nature.

Karioi Quilts & Crafts - second Thursday of every month.
The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. Primarily a patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.
From 2023, we changed the name to Karioi Quilts and Crafts to open the group up to other crafters.
Members can work on their own projects ranging from quilts, sewing projects and you can even bring your knitting, as long as it’s not a messy craft anything goes. New members are always welcome to come along to work on their own projects and learn techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.
Group co-ordinator is Sue Webber 021 489944
Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm (sometimes 3pm if the room is available) on the second Thursday of every month. 10 sessions per year from February to December. Subscription is $30 per yea r which goes towards room hire.

There is a lot of story to tell, in the events that led to the fall of Ōrākau, and Ka Whawhai Tonu covers a lot of ground, but still finds time for some of the more bonkers true-to-life details that transpired.

A ravishing account of the birth of Australian surf culture, and the accompanying indie film movement.
Sydney Film Festival Review “ The film begins with a brief present-day sequence, of someone viewing and splicing a reel of film, before we are plunged into archival footage, taken from the films of the 1960s-1980s. This footage is beautiful — 16mm shots of surfers in remote beaches, of the sun rising and setting, and imagery of the water on its own. It’s good that the visuals are gorgeous, because this, largely, is all we see for 81 minutes. If you have no interest in videos of surfers, this is not the movie for you. As we watch these images, we hear the voices of various people who were a part of surf culture, of the films we are watching. They are kept offscreen until the end, which is an effective ploy."
YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY combines hundreds of hours of lovingly restored 16mm surfing footage with a salt-infused soundscape by Headland. This cinematic poem tells the story of a wild Aussie community who took off up the coast and discovered a whole new way to live. Going back to the never-before-seen camera reels to ask the question - what do we keep and what do we leave behind?
Featuring Tim Winton, Wayne Lynch, Bob McTavish, Albe Falzon, Evelyn Rich, Maurice Cole and many more. Inspired by Moonage Daydream and Jen Peedom's Mountain.

The highest grossing film of 2023 in Italy, There’s Still Tomorrow is a vibrant, moving drama starring Paola Cortellesi in her directorial debut.
"An unashamed, old-fashioned melodrama develops into a more considered tale of small victories on the road to female empowerment." - Screen International
Delia (Cortellesi) lives in a working-class community in Rome in the late 1940s - a city divided between the positive thrust of liberation and the miseries of the war that has just ended - with her domineering husband, Ivano (Valerio Mastandrea), their three children, and father-in-law.
She rises above the daily challenges of family life; has a best friend with whom to share moments of levity, and dreams for her daughter Marcella to one day have a better life. Delia accepts her fate - the good with the bad - until one day a mysterious letter arrives. Shot in resplendent black and white, in the style of post-World War II Italian neorealist filmmakers, There’s Still Tomorrow is a critically acclaimed, bittersweet and empowering tale tinged with a comedic irony.
