For Māori, the canoe underpins our culture. We once built waka/canoes from giant trees and sailed the vast Pacific by the stars. These arts were lost to us for 600 years. Then the stars re-aligned and three men from far flung islands revived our place as the greatest navigators on the planet, a Hawaiian, a Micronesian and Hek Busby, “The Chief” from Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Whetū Mārama – Bright Star is the story of Sir Hekenukumai Ngaiwi Puhipi, aka Hek Busby, and his significance for Māori in rekindling their wayfinding DNA and for all New Zealanders in reclaiming our place as traditional star voyages on the world map. “Toby Mills and Aileen O’Sullivan’s stirring documentary Whetū Mārama – Bright Star depicts this extraordinary journey: Sir Hek’s willingness as a student, bravery as a modern-pioneer waka builder and navigator, and desire to pass on this regathered knowledge to future generations. Story strands are skillfully interwoven via recent interviews, waka hourua voyaging, archival footage and creative dramatic reconstructions.
Whetū Mārama conveys the wairua of Sir Hek, the impassioned individual, and of a committed group of pan-Pacific navigators and their supportive whānau, who together strove to restore an all but lost art of our voyaging Pacific heritage, thereby strengthening our future. Ka mua, ka muri (Walking backwards into the future) indeed!” — Jacob Powell Whetū Mārama – Bright Star is the story of a culture that understands an inner compass. Hek’s voyaging has reconnected his crews with their inbuilt GPS systems and they in turn are teaching and inspiring the next generation, building a bridge back into our past to take us forward into the future.

Cast: Hekenukumai Busby

THE DUKE is the true story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, who stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history.
Stuff, James Croot 4/5 Stars. "A fabulous showcase for one of the seemingly forgotten greats of British acting in Jim Broadbent and fitting fictional swansong by the brilliant director Roger Michell."
Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly - he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge - Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage - how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale.
Director: Roger Michell
Writers: Richard Bean, Clive Coleman
Cast: Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren, Matthew Goode, Fionn Whitehead

In this British Comedy, Jim Broadbent stars as 60-year-old Kempton Bunton who in 1961 stole Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. Helen Mirren stars as his long suffering wife.
Based on a real art theft, the great Jim Broadbent stars as an older taxi driver who stole a priceless portrait from London's National Gallery. His ransom? Free television for the elderly. From the director of Notting Hill, co-starring Jim Broadbent, Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey) and the almighty Helen Mirren.

Karioi Quilters - second Thursday of every month.
The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. A patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.
Members work on their own projects ranging from cot to queen-sized quilts. Many long enjoyable hours are spent working on intricate artistic fabric creations. A focus on pure natural fibres, especially cottons, results in high quality handworks which often become treasured family items. Group co-ordinator is Judy Levy.
New members are always welcome to come along to these casual meetings to work on their own projects and learn quilting techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.
Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm on the second Thursday of every month. So join them for a coffee and bring your lunch. Donation of $2 to help with the rent.

A complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the First World War, Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden / Peter Capaldi), a soldier decorated for his bravery on the battlefield, became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service.
NZ Listener 4/5 Stars "War Poet biopic is clever, funny and intoxicating"
Guardian, Peter Bradshaw 4/5 Stars. "The tragic life of the poet and soldier is revisited with melancholy and theatricality in a bleak, and often hard to watch, biopic."
Legendary still today for his poetry inspired by his experiences on the Western Front, he was adored by both members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and theatre scene. He embarked on affairs with several high-profile men as he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality, whilst at the same time, broken by the horrors of war, his life’s journey became a quest for salvation.

Graeme Tuckett Stuff/ Waikato Times 5 out of 5 Stars "A film that will be wondered over for years".
Director: Aideen O'Sullivan, Toby Mills
Cast: Hekenukumai Busby

Set in a time and place yet to exist, WALL•E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) is the last robot left on Earth, programmed to clean up the planet, one trash cube at a time. However, after 700 years, he’s developed one little glitch—a personality. He’s extremely curious, highly inquisitive, and a little lonely. WALL•E discovers a new purpose in life when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALL•E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future, and races back to space to report to the humans. Meanwhile, WALL•E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most imaginative adventures ever brought to the big screen.
Wall-E's vision of the future is a cautionary dystopia wrapped up in a children’s
tale, with a very funny and clear message; we make and use too much stuff and
if we keep going down this path, eventually our planet will be overwhelmed with
toxicity and threaten every life form to extinction.

Raglan Whāingaroa Creative Arts Planning Forum discussing, ‘What Now?
26th July 7pm – all welcome. Raglan Old School Arts Centre, 5 Stewart St, Raglan
In 2022 it’s time to prepare an update of the business plan that guides development and operation of the Raglan Old School Arts Centre.
The Old School is run by the Raglan Community Arts Council Inc. (RCAC), the local Raglan Whāingaroa arts and creative charity. Originally established in 1982, the Council is an incorporated society and is also a registered charity. It is governed by a management committee elected by its members.
On the 26th July at 7pm we are having a community arts forum discussing, ‘What Now? The community input will be used as the basis for updating our business plan. Our last 2015 update (see image) included building the Creative Space building. With that project and most of our other objectives achieved it’s time for a new plan.
So come along, participate in the forum and share your views. Our facilitator for the night is Raglanite Helen Ritchie. All RCAC members and the Whāingaroa community are welcome.
