Ian McKellen, Gemma Arterton and Mark Strong star in The Critic, a story of ambition, blackmail and desire with a dazzling anti-hero at its dark heart. A whodunnit wrapped in a Faustian pact which winds tighter and tighter.
“A pitch-perfect, provocative period thriller, one that might be a little broad for some tastes, but which certainly showcases the brilliance (and mischievousness) of McKellen, but also a terrific Gemma Arterton and an impressive ensemble that includes Mark Strong, Lesley Manville, Romola Garai, Alfred Enoch and Ben Barnes.” – 4.5/5 James Croot THE PRESS

The reimagining of Anthony Quinn’s novel ‘Curtain Call’ centre on Jimmy Erskine (McKellen), the Daily Chronicle’s most famous and featured theatre critic of the age; David Brooke (Strong), with whom he clashes after recently inheriting the paper; and a young actress, Nina Land (Arterton), who is devastated by Jimmy’s recent negative review of her. As the three become entangled in a whodunnit wrapped in a Faustian pact, their strange triangle winds tighter and tighter to devastating effect for all those caught in the deadly web of blackmail and betrayal.
