Expect rickety props, questionable special effects and lavish homemade costumes when This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy.

Encore screening at the Old School on Saturday 3 December at 3pm.

This New Zealand-made action comedy, which tells the story of three ordinary guys thrust into the world of a B-grade 1960s space flick, was directed and produced on a shoestring budget by artist Christian Nicolson, and was a runner-up in the inaugural Make My Movie competition in 2012.

Despite missing out on first prize, Nicolson was determined to see his first feature through to completion. So he held a huge sale of his artwork, scoured Auckland’s streets for prop-making materials and started filming.

Influenced by sci-fi classics like Blake’s 7, Lost in Space and Star Trek, Nicolson’s film has the look and feel of a cult classic. And it’s been winning endless praise and awards since its release, including Best Comedy at the 41st Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival and Best Comedy Sci-Fi London 2016.

This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy will screen at the Old School at 8pm on Friday 11 November, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with filmmaker Christian Nicolson.

“The biggest surprise of this year’s Boston SciFi – the audience loved it! It could easily become a breakout.” Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival.

“A wonderful film, very funny – every SF fan should see it!” – Sci-Fi London Film Festival

“It’s easily one of my favourite kiwi films ever. I actually already want to watch it again” – Karl Burnett – Shortland Street
