At Raglan Old School Arts Centre Gallery, 5 Stewart Street, Raglan 3225
Artist and Creative Market stallholder Colleen Vickers has collaborated with market coordinator Deb King to share her limited-edition prints, original artwork and cards at a Raglan Old School Gallery exhibition. Mainly painting watercolours, Colleen continues to do some work with graphite pencil, the medium she used first in her creative journey. “I started painting in watercolour about eight months ago when my daughter told me that my graphite drawings were too boring and that I needed to add colour,” she says. Borrowing her daughter's set of $5 watercolours, Colleen soon realised she enjoyed working with the medium.
Thinking she was just going to do it for fun and that she wasn’t really an artist, Colleen took to heart the wise words from her daughter – ‘Mum, you said I could be anything I wanted with passion and hard work, so why can’t you?’ With those words ringing in her ears, she set up a Facebook page and website, and started going to the Creative Markets in January this year. Colleen named her business ‘Lead by the Heart’ because, she says, all her artwork is inspired from emotion and it is also a subtle nod to her creative starts with ‘lead’ pencils. Her artistic passions include depicting emotion or emotion evoking images linked to motherhood and love, and New Zealand’s eclectic mix of native species. “I feel a strong connection to the native flora and fauna of New Zealand and you will see my affection for our country’s unique eclectic mix of species woven throughout my work.” The Lead by the Heart exhibition is dedicated to her daughter who provides the impetus for Colleens creative endeavors. “I felt it was fitting for us to celebrate over the Mother’s Day weekend, because if it weren’t for my daughter my journey may not have even begun as an artist.”
Colleen will be joined by artists and creative market stallholders Miriam Collins, whose illustrative works are a delightful melange of rich jewel tones, animalistic themes and graphic iconography, and Bridget Pride who enjoys colour, texture in oils on canvas and various subjects, depending on what is happening in life at the time.

- Best Adapted Screenplay - Kazuo Ishiguro
Stuff/ Waikato Times - James Croot 5 / 5 Stars: "Bill Nighy is at his stunning, tightly-wound best in this poignant and powerful English-language “reimagining” of Akira Kurosawa’s much-loved 1952 movie Ikiru (To Live)."
1953. A London shattered by WWII is still recovering. Williams (Bill Nighy), a veteran civil servant, is an important cog within the city’s bureaucracy as it struggles to rebuild. Buried under paperwork at the office, lonely at home, his life has long felt empty and meaningless. Then a shattering medical diagnosis forces him to take stock – and to try and grasp fulfilment before it goes beyond reach.
At a seaside resort, chaperoned by a local decadent (Tom Burke), he flirts with hedonism before rejecting it as his solution. Back in London he finds himself drawn to the natural vitality of Margaret (Aimee Lou Wood), a young woman who once worked under his supervision and is now determined to spread her wings.
Then one evening he is struck by a revelation – one as simple as it is profound – and with a new energy, and the help of Peter (Alex Sharp), an idealistic new recruit to his department, he sets about creating a legacy for the next generation.

Karioi Quilts & Crafts - second Thursday of every month.
The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. Primarily a patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.
This year, 2023, we changed the name to Karioi Quilts and Crafts to open the group up to other crafters.
Members can work on their own projects ranging from quilts, sewing projects and you can even bring your knitting, as long as it’s not a messy craft anything goes. New members are always welcome to come along to work on their own projects and learn techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.
Group co-ordinator is Sue Webber 021 489944
Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm (sometimes 3pm if the room is available) on the second Thursday of every month. 10 sessions per year from February to December. Subscription is $30 per year which goes towards room hire.

'We take our music very seriously, but we love to have fun too'
Gilly Darbey and Vikki Clayton are famed for their beautiful voices, write much of their own material and between them play several instruments. Singing songs of love and life, these girls have impeccable pedigrees when it comes to musical careers.
Between them (and sometimes together) they've worked with Van Morrison, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Fairport Convention, Joan Armatrading, Ralph McTell (blah blah - the list is endless) and they are too modest (old) to remember them all. They've toured the world, played major festivals and events and armed with nothing but their voices, charm and prosecco they thrill audiences everywhere.
This is their second Raglan concert and this time they will also be teaching a vocal workshop.

Best Production Design - Helen Scott
2023 OSCAR Nominee
- Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - Bill Nighy
Director: Oliver Hermanus
Writer: Kazuo Ishiguro
Cast: Bill Nighy, Tom Burke, Aimee Lou Wood, Alex Sharp, Adrian Rawlins

The true story of a national spiritual awakening in the early 1970s and its origins within a community of teenage hippies in Southern California.
In the 1970s, young Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) is searching for all the right things in all the wrong places: until he meets Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), a charismatic hippie-street-preacher. Together with Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), they open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to what TIME Magazine dubbed a "Jesus Revolution."

The incredible true story, SHACKLETON: THE GREATEST STORY OF SURVIVAL traces the expedition of Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the world’s greatest explorers. He set off in the Endurance with a crew of 28 to attempt the first crossing of Antarctica. Their journey has since become known as one of the most miraculous survival stories ever told.
SHACKLETON features re-mastered footage captured from the 1914 expedition, as well as stunning high definition imagery of adventurer Tim Jarvis repeating their feat (the only man ever to do so).
