When the magic of movies conquers nine-year young Samay's heart; he moves heaven and earth in pursuit of his 35mm dreams unaware of heartbreaking times that await him.

Festival programmer Jane Schoettle applauded Dennison’s charismatic performance. “Directors Hamish Bennett and Paul Middleditch intelligently frame his character’s coming of age through the country’s own growing pains and acknowledgement of racial identities. With wit and wisdom, Uproar offers a cheering call to action and a reminder to live as your true self, even if it sometimes gets in the way.”
Julian Dennison stars in UPROAR
UPROAR is a moving and heartwarming story about connection and finding your place in the world. It is the story of 17-year-old Josh Waaka (played by Julian Dennison). Set in Dunedin in 1981, a rugby-obsessed country is divided over the arrival of the South African Springboks team, sparking nationwide protests. Under pressure from home and school to conform, Josh, who has never felt like he fits in anywhere, is inspired by the protests and by a newfound passion for performing to find his own voice. Swellnet Stu Nettle "The surfing sequences, especially at the left, have gotta be seen in the context of discovery; of disappearing over the frontier, far from comfort or help. Many waves are repeated, filmed from two angles, which betrays a low wave count, but also the difficulties faced - every wave was a victory of sorts."
Follow filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment and surfers Letty Mortenson and Fraser Dovell as they journey to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia in search of new waves along the frozen, unexplored coastline.
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk with more than 150 volcanoes (29 active) the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia is as remote as it is unique. After two years of planning the trip was almost over before it started. An hour before boarding their flight to Moscow, Russia invaded Ukraine. At a time when the world was seeing the worst of human nature, these guys flew behind the iron curtain and found, to their surprise the best of it. Mi-8 helicopters, skidoos, frozen campsites, and frozen bank accounts, this surf trip quickly became far more than anyone could imagine.

Harold is an ordinary man who has passed through life, living on the side lines, until he goes to post a letter one day...and just keeps walking.
Graeme Tuckett Waikato Times/ Stuff 4/5 Stars "Jim Broadbent is terrific, but everyone in front of and behind the camera is making smart decisions, every step of the way in The Unexpected Pilgrimage of Harold Fry."
THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY is the story of an unremarkable man who sets off on a remarkable journey. Harold lives a life without purpose until he learns an old friend is dying and vows that in walking across England to see her, his journey can keep her alive. Based on the 2012 New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller of the same name, this heartfelt and original take on the coming-of-age narrative will resonate with audiences of all ages.
Recently retired, Harold Fry is well into his 60s and content to fade quietly into the background of life. Harold’s life with his wife Maureen is uneventful and their marriage frozen, due to an unspeakable conflict relating to the absence of their son, until one day, Harold learns his old friend Queenie is dying.
He sets off to the post office to send her a letter and decides to keep walking: all the way to her hospice, 450 miles away. A story of rediscovery and transformation, HAROLD FRY is an uplifting reminder that you’re never too old to take a chance, and that kindness is less rare than you think.

Karioi Quilts & Crafts - second Thursday of every month.
The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. Primarily a patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.
This year, 2023, we changed the name to Karioi Quilts and Crafts to open the group up to other crafters.
Members can work on their own projects ranging from quilts, sewing projects and you can even bring your knitting, as long as it’s not a messy craft anything goes. New members are always welcome to come along to work on their own projects and learn techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.
Group co-ordinator is Sue Webber 021 489944
Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm (sometimes 3pm if the room is available) on the second Thursday of every month. 10 sessions per year from February to December. Subscription is $30 per year which goes towards room hire.

River of Freedom is a feature documentary about the New Zealanders that occupied parliament grounds in early 2022 - who the people were, why they were there, and what happened.
The Platform, "Doco on anti-mandate protests shapes up to be a sleeper hit. Director Gaylene Barnes' excellent documentary River of Freedom on the anti-mandate protests in Wellington will be welcomed by the government in much the same way Nicky Hager's books have been in the run-up to elections.”
RIVER OF FREEDOM how thousands of New Zealanders begin a convoy to Wellington from Cape Reinga and Bluff with a clear message to the government - end the mandates.
Yellow Car from Goodbye Pork Pie Photo Dane Scott
On the road to Parliament are people from all walks of life - teachers and students, caregivers and medical professionals, first responders, tradies, musicians, commercial pilots, farmers, business owners, government employees, all suffering some form of loss, whether it be employment, education, connections, wellbeing or opportunities, the impact is both significant and real. The convoy sparks hope for them and the many others who have been negatively affected across the nation!
New Zealanders gather on the lawn of Parliament to express their grievances, intent on change and expecting democratic representation. Local tangata whenua welcome the protestors and together they co-create a ‘freedom village’ - a symbol of resistance, resilience, and kotahitanga (unity).
They stand strong in the face of police arrests, psychological tactics orchestrated by the Speaker of the House, gale force winds and Wellington’s second wettest day on record.
However, the people are ignored. Under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's leadership, all 120 representative Members of Parliament collectively agree not to communicate with the protestors.
After 23 days, the New Zealand Police ambush the community in a dawn raid, forcibly removing everyone with weapons never before used in Aotearoa.
River of Freedom is made by professional filmmakers present during the convoy and occupation - the largest and most diverse protest movement in New Zealand’s history.

A sequence of events sees Josh embrace his community and his whakapapa Māori, taking him and his whānau on a journey towards healing.

FULL HOUSE - NO SEATS FOR THIS SESSION AVAILABLE

Raglan Arts Weekend, aka RAW, is a self-guided tour, with visitors using the Arts Trail maps to help them plan their own routes. You can start at the Old School Arts Centre where you can pick up a brochure, view an artwork from each participating artist and plan the rest of your day or weekend. As well as the Preview Exhibition, there are 300mm×300mm artworks available for a fraction of the usual price. These pieces are donated by the artists to help support the event and are priced at just $200 each.
RAW studios are open Saturday 21 October to Monday 23 October 2023. All studios are open 10am until 5pm. Some studios are closed on Monday so please refer to the Raglan Arts Guide for details, or see individual artist listings for 2023.
Raglan’s 13th open studio event, RAW continues to evolve to keep it fresh and fun for all involved. This year includes the launch of an ‘Emerging Artists Exhibition’ at the town hall, which will see around 15 new and upcoming talented artists push their boundaries, showcase artworks and be available to discuss their art explorations. This will be the first large group exhibition for RAW in the last few years, and will be managed by Caleb Osborne, an emerging artist himself and affiliated with the Waikato Society of Arts. “Within the arts sector, there are barriers emerging artists can face when building business capability and portfolio exposure, such as availability of exhibition spaces,
exhibition and commission costs and prior experience,” Caleb says. “We hope to help new artists navigate these challenges and ultimately celebrate their artistic journeys and courage.”
Also new this year, courtesy of a generous donation from Bayleys Raglan, is an ‘Artist-Connect’ bus, a RAW artist-only tour of some of the studio highlights just ahead of the weekend itself, and a ticketed opening cocktail event at Rock-It to kickstart the RAW weekend festivities.

Wakatipu Tahuna based Mirai brings forth heart stirrings, contemplations and reflections woven into songs as a way of alchemizing lived experiences.
'Patience to Bloom' is the headline for her intimate tour around Aotearoa.

Follow your heart. Find your voice.
World Premiere September 2023 in the Special Presentation segment of TIFF.
A sequence of events sees Josh embrace his community and his whakapapa Māori, taking him and his whānau on a journey towards healing.

Cast: Julian Dennison, Rhys Darby, Erana James, James Rolleston, Minnie Driver

When disaster strikes a community arises! Taking Back Our Beach’ opens in New Zealand cinemas from October 5, 2023, which is also the 12th anniversary of the Rena grounding in 2011 on Otaiti/Astrolabe Reef.
Selected for Doc Edge Festival 2023
TAKING BACK OUR BEACH
This is a film about the response by a community to New Zealand’s largest environmental disaster, seen through the eyes of that community.
When the MV Rena grounded on Ōtāiti (Astrolabe reef) on 5 October 2011 it wasn’t just the iconic New Zealand coastline and wildlife that were threatened by the ensuing black waves of oil and debris, but also a lifestyle treasured by its residents. The disaster reveals a deep connection to the environment in both local Māori and Pakeha (European descendants) alike.
When floundering bureaucrats initially ignore the local advice and knowledge that could have largely avoided the disaster, and then are painfully slow to clean up the overwhelming mess, the community steps in, taking matters into their own hands. A groundswell of volunteers goes out daily to help save wildlife and clean up the massive field of oil and debris strewn along the coast.
The film captures the shock, anger and grief driven into the heart of the local community, but also the humour, purpose and overwhelming positivity when people join together with a common goal.
In the aftermath of the clean-up, a further battle to remove the remains of the wreck ensues, with community unity threatened through the overpowering insurers and ship owners. The mauri (life force) of a national taonga (treasure) Ōtāiti is forever altered, however the power of a simple act of forgiveness shown to the ship’s scapegoated Filipino crew offers a beautiful way forward to growth and recovery.
From septuagenarian widowers chasing oiled penguins around their living rooms to a 6-metre long barbecue feeding volunteers for free, to youth impersonating army personnel in order to be allowed onto the beach to clean up oil, the documentary is made up of interviews with 35 local people (iwi, retirees, volunteers, wildlife leaders, marine experts, small business owners and community leaders).
A wealth of never-before-seen stock footage and amazing photos, augmented by re-enactments and CGI graphics brings these stories to life and paints a picture of “a great moment in human history” (the late Brian Rogers, Owner Sun Media / Interviewee).

ENCORE SCREENINGRiver of Freedom is a feature documentary about the New Zealanders that occupied parliament grounds in early 2022 - who the people were, why they were there, and what happened.

In one of the more curious mixes of talents and source material, this is the live action feature of Mattel's Barbie. It's directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), co-written by Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), stars Margot Robbie as big B and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Will Ferrell, who plays a Mattel CEO, has called the film “the ultimate example of high art and low art... an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society”.
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
Eccentric and individualistic, Barbie is exiled from Barbieland because of her imperfections. When her home world is in peril, Barbie returns...
