Straight māfana, go with your heart
Graeme Tuckett Waikato Times/ Stuff 4/5 Stars "Kiwi charmer that's pretty much the definition of a feel-good movie."
When Maka and Veni fail in getting tickets for the most important game of their lives, they decide to form a traditional Tongan marching band, just so they can go to the game. No one in their band of misfits knows anything about marching and they practice using plastic bottles and tin cans for instruments.
It is a complete shambles and if they can’t get their act together, they will embarrass their entire Tongan community in front of the world. However, what starts out as just a cynical scam to see a rugby game becomes a journey of self-discovery in which Maka and Veni will learn the importance of their Tongan culture.

The French drama you definitely won't want to see on an empty stomach
James Croot Waikato Times/ Stuff 3.5/5 Stars "bittersweet tale of one man overcoming a troubled upbringing to achieve success in a field that requires traits initially thought beyond him."
Ever since he was a little boy, Yazid has dreamed of becoming a pastry chef. Moved from one foster home to another, nothing predestined him for such a career. Yazid’s indomitable determination and resourcefulness have proven priceless in helping him succeed in the elitist arena of patisserie. Working for the world’s top chefs from Paris to Monaco, he strives to become the best and to fulfill his dream of winning the international pastry championship.

Swellnet Stu Nettle "The surfing sequences, especially at the left, have gotta be seen in the context of discovery; of disappearing over the frontier, far from comfort or help. Many waves are repeated, filmed from two angles, which betrays a low wave count, but also the difficulties faced - every wave was a victory of sorts."
Follow filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment and surfers Letty Mortenson and Fraser Dovell as they journey to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia in search of new waves along the frozen, unexplored coastline.
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk with more than 150 volcanoes (29 active) the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia is as remote as it is unique. After two years of planning the trip was almost over before it started. An hour before boarding their flight to Moscow, Russia invaded Ukraine. At a time when the world was seeing the worst of human nature, these guys flew behind the iron curtain and found, to their surprise the best of it. Mi-8 helicopters, skidoos, frozen campsites, and frozen bank accounts, this surf trip quickly became far more than anyone could imagine.

Karioi Quilts & Crafts - second Thursday of every month.
The Karioi Quilters have been making high quality, natural fibre, artistic quilts for many years. Primarily a patchwork and quilting group, the members meet to share knowledge and skills and enjoy creating in good company.
This year, 2023, we changed the name to Karioi Quilts and Crafts to open the group up to other crafters.
Members can work on their own projects ranging from quilts, sewing projects and you can even bring your knitting, as long as it’s not a messy craft anything goes. New members are always welcome to come along to work on their own projects and learn techniques from a group of very creative craftspeople.
Group co-ordinator is Sue Webber 021 489944
Meetings are held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from 10am to 1pm (sometimes 3pm if the room is available) on the second Thursday of every month. 10 sessions per year from February to December. Subscription is $30 per year which goes towards room hire.

Harold is an ordinary man who has passed through life, living on the side lines, until he goes to post a letter one day...and just keeps walking.
Graeme Tuckett Waikato Times/ Stuff 4/5 Stars "Jim Broadbent is terrific, but everyone in front of and behind the camera is making smart decisions, every step of the way in The Unexpected Pilgrimage of Harold Fry."
THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY is the story of an unremarkable man who sets off on a remarkable journey. Harold lives a life without purpose until he learns an old friend is dying and vows that in walking across England to see her, his journey can keep her alive. Based on the 2012 New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller of the same name, this heartfelt and original take on the coming-of-age narrative will resonate with audiences of all ages.
Recently retired, Harold Fry is well into his 60s and content to fade quietly into the background of life. Harold’s life with his wife Maureen is uneventful and their marriage frozen, due to an unspeakable conflict relating to the absence of their son, until one day, Harold learns his old friend Queenie is dying.
He sets off to the post office to send her a letter and decides to keep walking: all the way to her hospice, 450 miles away. A story of rediscovery and transformation, HAROLD FRY is an uplifting reminder that you’re never too old to take a chance, and that kindness is less rare than you think.

The Women’s Adventure Film Tour returns for its 7th season, celebrating extraordinary women in the name of adventure.
The Women’s Adventure Film Tour is back with its highly anticipated 7th season. It features an exhilarating selection of 7 new short films that showcase the inspiring journeys of remarkable women who have fearlessly pursued adventure in various fields. This year's tour promises to captivate audiences with incredible stories of determination, courage, and triumph.
Headlining the 2023 tour is the Australian film, Making It, follows pro surfer, India Robinson, former Australian netball captain Caitlin “C-Bass” Bassett, promising rugby star and UNSW student Aneeka Riley, and competitive skier Annabel Blake. The film explores the unrelenting pursuit of success for female and non-binary athletes and the complex and often conflicting ideas of when one truly “make it”.
In addition to Making It, the tour promises an array of awe-inspiring adventures. Witness the destiny of a Sherpa woman, experience the courage of Jenny Tough as she embarks on a solo run across six continents, and immerse yourself in the captivating world of free diving, ice climbing, and much more. These films showcase real stories about women from diverse cultures and sports around the globe, shining a spotlight on their remarkable achievements and personal growth through adventure.

The Women’s Adventure Film Tour has been celebrated for its unique approach to showcasing women achieving their adventurous goals. Unlike traditional adventure films focusing solely on extreme feats, this tour aims to inspire everyone to step outside their comfort zone and challenge their boundaries – their personal Everest. It's a celebration of bravery, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit within us.
The Women’s Adventure Film Tour is presented by Mountain Designs and sponsored by Costa, Victorinox and Thermos.

Festival programmer Jane Schoettle applauded Dennison’s charismatic performance. “Directors Hamish Bennett and Paul Middleditch intelligently frame his character’s coming of age through the country’s own growing pains and acknowledgement of racial identities. With wit and wisdom, Uproar offers a cheering call to action and a reminder to live as your true self, even if it sometimes gets in the way.”
Julian Dennison stars in UPROAR
UPROAR is a moving and heartwarming story about connection and finding your place in the world. It is the story of 17-year-old Josh Waaka (played by Julian Dennison). Set in Dunedin in 1981, a rugby-obsessed country is divided over the arrival of the South African Springboks team, sparking nationwide protests. Under pressure from home and school to conform, Josh, who has never felt like he fits in anywhere, is inspired by the protests and by a newfound passion for performing to find his own voice. A sequence of events sees Josh embrace his community and his whakapapa Māori, taking him and his whānau on a journey towards healing.
