Lucy Standbridge (Plaza) has inherited her father's publishing house, and the ambitious would-be editor has nearly sunk it with failing titles. This is a story of two environmentalists, UN Special Envoy and celebrated yachtsman Sir Peter Blake and eco warrior Pete Bethune, who were brutally attacked in the same city in the Brazilian Amazon on separate expeditions 16 years apart. One was murdered and one lives to tell the tale.
Three investigative journalists and Pete Bethune seek the truth about who was behind the attacks as they unravel the connections between corruption, organised crime and violence in one of the most dangerous cities on the Amazon.
Led by journalist and Professor of criminology, Irishman Donal MacIntyre with his two Brazilian based media associates, as they join the film crew for 8 weeks in various locations on the Amazon in search of the truth.
The Garden of Evil explores the possibility that the attacks might have been connected to powerful criminal organisations involved in lucrative but highly illegal logging and the trafficking of endangered animals.
A 78 minute feature documentary
Written, Produced and Directed by Larry Keating

Oscar-nominated director Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?) examines the truly epic life of ocean explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau who sailed the globe with his misfit crew of divers and filmmakers.
The Frenchman who first sounded the alarm to save the oceans was born with a dream to fly, but a car accident grounded his aviation career, and he found rehabilitation and inspiration through free-diving in the South of France. His desire to go deeper and further led him to inventions that would forever change the way we see and know the undersea world, co-inventing the “aqualung” and revolutionising underwater cinematography.

Taiwhanga Whakaatu | The Gallery at the Old School, 5 Stewart St, Raglan,
10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Open Sunday 9th January 10am – 2pm and then weekdays 10am – 2pm until February 11.
Zasha Skye Exhibition ‘The Colour in You’ – curated oil paintings. The exhibition will also feature a series of photographs by Sven Seddon.
Zasha Skye
Using oil paint on canvas, the 20-year-old explores texture and form to create a systematic piece, within an impressionistic style. A first exhibition for the young creative, Zasha was inspired by modern youth and the connections that surround each individual “I wanted to explore colour and how colours can portray your inner emotions,” she says.
Taking her art to the next step, Zasha began studying in 2021 for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, a premier arts institute in Auckland. “I find being surrounded by like-minded students is continuously inspiring and motivating.”
Having grown up in Whaingaroa, she has been inspired by being surrounded by a strong art-filled community. “This allows for a massive amount of support that I am truly grateful for.” Zasha says she has always been interested in textures from clay to paint and around the age of 16 she began exploring oil paint and how it can be used over a canvas.

Another great line-up this month with bass player / singer songwriter Odhran Devlin, Sasha Kirkwood (who was a hit at the November concert) is returning with Sophie-May as a duo, and Rata Gordon will be reading from her poetry.
Rata Gordon is a poet, Open Floor dance teacher and arts therapist. Her poetry has appeared in Best New Zealand Poems, Landfall, The Spinoff and elsewhere. Her first book of poetry, Second Person, was published in 2020 by Victoria University Press. She offers movement and writing classes in person and online.
Sophie-May (from Hamilton) and Sasha Kirkwood (Raglan) are a couple of singer-songwriters who love to harmonise. They met during a 2019 theatre production in Kirikiriroa, and haven’t stopped singing together ever since! Both girls are in the process of recording and releasing their own music, and cannot wait to have their stuff out there for people to enjoy.
Odhrán (silent d!) hails from County Derry in the north of Ireland. There, he had the fortune to work as a session bass player with some of the finest songwriters of the day. While bass remains his first love, he has written a handful of songs over the years which he accompanies on acoustic guitar. Most of his songs are narrative driven and based on his own experiences. Odhran also plays songs by people he’s had the fortune to record with. He enjoys sharing the stories of these songs and their writers as well.
If you are interested in performing in future concerts, contact Penni at music@raglanartscentre.co.nz
